We're now officially deep into springtime in Longville. The hummers have returned and provide daily entertainment with their antics.
But these are not the only avian visitors to brighten our porch viewing pleasure. We've had regular indigo bunting sightings.
Some red-bellied woodpeckers (odd name in that there is no red anywhere on their bellies) are frequent visitors.
...and the butterflies really enjoyed the azalea blooms (along with hummingbirds and bumble bees).
Speaking of flowers, the azaleas were pretty magnificent.
We also have climbing wild roses in the area...here's one from the deer field.
The purloined irises turned out to be LSU colors...I think we'll keep them.
There's a nice patch of spider wort right by the back porch.
Of course we're doing our part to add to the flora diversity...the second planter box was installed to receive the hybrid blackberries, and we're trying our hand at watermelons. We added peppers and tomatoes to the blueberry box.
We took Big Daddy to Ft Worth for a visit with Aunt Cheryl. Friday we took in the Arts Festival in downtown cowtown.
Saturday, we drove down to Crawford to see Steve and Karen and their new (first) grandbaby. We took advantage of the occasion to capture 4 generations of oldest son Fell boys (82 yrs old to 2 weeks old).
The grandkids came yesterday and I thought it was a good time to start cleaning out the freezer. We ate fried specks, reds (and croaker!) on Good Friday, and since Jack was curious about pot roasted ducks, I busted out two that had been in the freezer a while (along with a couple of doves, a woodcock and a couple of yard squirrels). Here's what they looked like while the vegetables were browning. They didn't last long enough after they were done for me to get a picture.
Speaking of critters, the Scotty cam is out of commision for a while - I had a big dead oak fall across the trail and I haven't cleared it out. The feeder is empty and I need a clear path to wheelbarrow a couple of 50 lb sacks of corn back there. All the more reason to keep a UTV and road building in my future plans. The house feeder continues to feed the critters.
The Easter Bunny is also scoping out the place. I think that's a Hershey rabbit in the back of the field.
We have a big Thibodeaux crawfish boil next Saturday, and I'm hoping to get a good pictorial to document the festivities. Until then, I'll make like my little hummer and...
