Someone dumped this poor lab puppy near our house. The lucky pup came running up our driveway to the three girls...trouble for sure. It got a bath, some food then a lot of loving. I frantically put out the call for anyone who wanted a trendy "rescue dog".
It followed Audrey around until they left, then got acquainted with Scott and Brian when they came for a visit. Everyone loved the puppy except Buck...and it wouldn't work for us to keep him. Poor pup was destined for the pound, but Brian used the power of social media (Facebook) and found a really nice young family in Baton Rouge that was delighted to take him. The have a young son named Finn, and they named the puppy Huckleberry before it was even delivered. Brian saved the puppy and our pending trauma with a pound visit...a real hero! ("Huck" sure looked better after a week with us)
Anyway, the fishing trip referenced earlier did not only yield hardheads. We fished Joe's Cove in Hackberry and picked up 5 trout, a drum and one surprise.
That jack crevalle put up quite a fight on light spinning tackle, but Joe got him in. Too bad they are inedible. We stayed on the water until sunset and eviction by the Hackberry Air Force.
I was able to go fishing with Scott and Brian while they were here. We hit West Cove to look for birds and chase specks.
No Scott, we're not looking for pelicans...
We found gafftops, hardheads and undersized trout with one exception.
I hope the fishing gets better in the fall...buts it's fun to get out on the water in any case - so relaxing and a nice break from working on the property.
While Joe was here, he worked on sprucing up Honey's old bedroom furniture from her teenage years. We rescued it from a barn in Waco this spring when we went to visit the Texas Fells. We're scheduled to deliver the set to Maggie and Bea before the end of the summer (a good excuse to go see them before Mags starts kindergarten and after Bea turns 1 year old...already!). I don't know if they're anxious to get 70+ year old bedroom furniture, but it's coming anyway.
Denise and I took an afternoon to check out possibilities at south Toledo Bend. We didn't bring the boat, but it may be worth a future trip to try some freshwater piscatorial pursuits.
As far as the critter cam, it's been more of the same except that a big coon has evidently timed the 6:00 AM morning feeding (the camera time is about an hour off). I may just have to get up early and serve him a little lead biscuit breakfast soon.
Finally, we celebrated Jack's recent 15th (!!!) birthday with a big T-bone meal. Of course, we had some for everyone else, but Jack polished off his along with all of the sides and finished up with a liberal portion of Blue Bell.
Life is good.
